JOINT ADMISSION TEST

Conducted by The Joint Admission Test (JAM) is conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on a rotational basis every year.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Educational Qualification: Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in Science/Mathematics/Statistics or equivalent with valid marks as specified by the conducting IIT.
  • Age Limit: There is no age limit to appear for JAM.
  • Nationality: Only Indian nationals are eligible to apply. Foreign nationals can also apply if they meet the eligibility criteria and the specific requirements set by the JAM organizing committee.

Exam Pattern

  • Mode of Exam: Online Computer-Based Test (CBT).
  • Number of Questions: Typically 60 questions consisting of multiple-choice questions (MCQs), multiple select questions (MSQs), and numerical answer type questions (NATs).
  • Marking Scheme: Each question carries different weightage. For MCQs, 1 or 2 marks per question with negative marking applicable for 1-mark MCQs. MSQs and NATs do not have negative marking.
  • Subjects Covered: The exam is conducted for various subjects including Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics, and Biological Sciences depending on the paper chosen.
  • Exam Schedule: JAM is usually held annually in February. The official notification is typically released in August/September of the preceding year.

JAM Detailed Syllabus:

  • Biological Sciences (BL): General Biology, Microbiology, Plant Science, Animal Science, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, etc.
  • Chemistry (CY): Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry.
  • Mathematics (MA): Algebra, Calculus, Differential Equations, Vector Algebra, Probability, Statistics, etc.
  • Mathematical Statistics (MS): Probability, Statistical Methods, Sampling Distributions, Testing of Hypotheses, Linear Models, etc.
  • Physics (PH): Mathematical Methods, Mechanics and General Properties of Matter, Oscillations and Waves, Heat and Thermodynamics, Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism, Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Currents, Optics, Modern Physics.

  2. Register by creating a new user ID and password.
  3. Fill the online application form with personal, academic, and contact details.
  4. Upload scanned copies of photograph and signature as per specifications.

  6. Submit the application and take a printout for future reference.
